Vance, a cumbersome number 2 for Donald Trump

Since he came to the forefront, JD Vance, chosen in July to accompany Donald Trump to the White House in the event of victory in November, has increased his provocative outings, creating trouble even in his camp. This Tuesday, the senator from Ohio has the opportunity to rectify the situation during the only televised debate against Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential candidate.

The rumor of cats and dogs being eaten by Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio? It’s him, at least in part. The taunts against “unhappy cat ladies”, guilty of not having children? It’s totally him. Since becoming a national figure, JD Vance, senator from Ohio since January 2023, propelled this summer as vice-presidential candidate at just 40 years old, has multiplied his controversial outings.

Without much success so far: almost one in 2 Americans today has a bad image of Donald Trump’s running mate. To the point that many wonder if he is not a burden for the Republican candidate. Like Dan Quayle, George Bush Senior’s vice-presidential candidate in 1988 and media sufferer, because of his repeated gaffes and his lack of repartee. His failed debate, however, did not prevent his boss from accessing the Oval Office.

A resolutely “MAGA” vice-president

After violently criticizing Donald Trump in 2016, even daring a comparison with Hitler, JD Vance ended up rallying to the “MAGA” cause (for “Make America Great Again”, Donald Trump’s slogan in 2016 which became the name of his vision political, nationalist). A turnaround not devoid of calculation since it was thanks to the support of the Queens businessman that JD Vance, then unknown, won the Republican primary in 2022, opening the doors of the Senate to him.

Now one of Donald Trump’s most loyal followers, JD Vance, who roamed the frozen plains of Iowa with a “MAGA” cap on his head at the start of the year to plead the former president’s cause at the start primaries, experienced a meteoric rise. It is, it is said, his pugnacity on television sets, which he continued, as a senator, to defend Donald Trump, which earned him to be chosen as “VP”. A decision which says a lot about the radicalization of the real estate mogul: in 2016, it was with a conservative, but classic Republican, in the person of Mike Pence, that he presented himself before the voters. Eight years later, it is a 100% “MAGA” candidacy that he is proposing to the Americans.

A muscular face-to-face expected

Pugnacious, JD Vance should be pugnacious again this evening, against Tim Walz, twenty years his senior, more debonair but just as determined. A native of Nebraska and governor of Minnesota since 2019, Tim Walz was chosen to appeal to a rather white and popular electorate in the north and central United States. Just like JD Vance, a native of Ohio, who recounted in a best-selling book his difficult childhood in an America ravaged by unemployment and deindustrialization.

The two men have already clashed through indirect statements. Tim Walz was the first to call ” suspicious “ the Trump-Vance tandem, an expression taken up by the Democrats, and JD Vance expressed doubts about the military past of the governor of Minnesota, a member of the National Guard for nearly 25 years. Accusations that could raise the temperature on the CBS set. Especially since the candidates’ microphones will never be cut, allowing opponents to interrupt, unlike the Trump-Harris debate.
