What is Heart, this book selected for the Goncourt Prize?

With his new book, Thibault de Montaigu delves into the history of his family and unearths the happy and shameful secrets of his lineage.

The literary season continues and the awards ceremonies follow one another. While the Fnac Novel Prize announced its winner, the 2024 Goncourt Prize unveiled its first selection of 16 titles, before a second selection of only eight to come on October 1.

Among them is the new book by Thibault de Montaigu, entitled Heart and interested in his family lineage and history. Like Hélène Gaudy in Archipelagos (Éditions de l’Olivier) – also selected for the Goncourt prize – the author deals with family memories and trauma by tracing the thread of his ancestors when his sick father asks him to write about Louis, captain of the hussars broke in 1914 in a cavalry charge.

Talk about him and his family

By discovering certain answers, Thibault de Montaigu finds many questions and launches into a race against time to unravel the buried secrets – happy and less happy – of his family, addressing in the process honor and goodness.

Heart has been available since August 21, 2024 from Albin Michel editions and is also included in the first selection of the 2024 Goncourt des Lycéens prize, the first selection of the 2024 Renaudot prize and the first selection of the 2024 Jean Giono prize.

Journalist and writer, Thibault de Montaigu has written seven novels and essays since the start of his career in 2003 with The Angels are burning (Fayard). Since then, he has regularly returned to the forefront, recognized for his incisive writing and for the variety of subjects discussed, ranging from journalism to sexuality.

The family remains decisive at the heart of his work, like the book Gracepublished in 2020 by Éditions Plon, which earned him the Flore prize, and in which Thibault de Montaigu talks about his spiritual journey while carrying the story of his uncle, touched “by grace” at 37 years old and taking a vow of poverty and abstinence after years of excess.
