Liesbeth Homans (N-VA) will remain chairman of the Flemish Parliament for the time being, Vooruit: “This gives us time to place the right profile”

Vooruit chairman Conner Rousseau has asked current parliament speaker Liesbeth Homans (N-VA) to remain in post as chairman until the end of December. Vooruit itself is now looking for a “suitable candidate” to take over the torch afterwards. The party takes into account that people will leave parliament after the local elections and that will influence the choice.

When the ministerial posts were distributed, the chairmanship of parliament – a post that is part of the puzzle – ended up with Vooruit. This would mean that current chairman Liesbeth Homans (N-VA) would have to give up her chair to a member of the Vooruit faction. But Vooruit has asked Homans to remain in post until the end of this year.

“Our faction could look completely different within two weeks,” the party leadership said. “So in the interest of continuity, we have chosen to let Homans stay on until the end of this year. This gives us time to place the right profile.”

The party takes into account that people will leave parliament after the local elections because they become mayor. Hannes Anaf, among others, has a good chance of becoming mayor in Turnhout. Hans Bonte is mayor in Vilvoorde and is waiting to see whether there will be a third term in office.
