Live – Mass at the King Baudouin stadium ends, last stop of Pope Francis’ visit

LPope Francis officiated a mass in front of more than 35,000 people at the King Baudouin stadium this Sunday.

Pope Francis will now leave for Melsbroek military airport around 12:45 p.m., marking the end of his visit to Belgium.

Pope Francis asked, during the mass he presided over on Sunday at the King Baudouin stadium, “to everyone not to cover up ‘abuse’” and to condemn the aggressors in order to be able to “heal from this disease that is ‘abuse’ », referring to sexual violence committed within the Church.

“I ask the bishops: do not cover up abuse, condemn those who abuse,” he further expressed.

The sovereign pontiff added that it was necessary “to make things known” and “to denounce those who ‘abuse’. It takes courage to do it,” he said. “Those who ‘abuse’ must be judged, whether they are lay people, priests or bishops,” the head of the Catholic Church further underlined.

Expected disruptions

Traffic will be interrupted throughout the security perimeter on the Heysel plateau and in many surrounding streets. Parking will also be prohibited there. For its part, the Stib will set up an “events” system, similar to major concerts or football matches: the frequencies of metro line 6 will be increased and metro line 2 extended from Simonis to the stop King Baldwin. If necessary, additional metros will also be injected into the network, particularly for exiting the stadium. The frequencies of tram 7 (Vanderkindere – Heysel) will also be increased.
