Price of 7-year-old Sony game suddenly doubles

The PlayStation 5 Pro https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/buy-consoles/playstation5-pro-console launches at a base price of $700, with the complete bundle, including disc and media, being able to reach $850. Although Sony claims the console is a “complete package for avid gamers”, many fans consider the price excessive. The company is now widely seen as the next misstep.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is an open-world action role-playing game that puts players in the shoes of Hunter Aloy, who embarks on an exciting journey into a post-apocalyptic future dominated by machine creatures. The game was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017 and was later added to the “PlayStation Hit” list, which includes particularly popular games at a discounted price of $20. Today the price was doubled to $40 without any announcement. The reason for this price increase is obvious: the upcoming release of the Horizon: Zero Dawn Remaster game.

Anyone who already owns the game can upgrade to the remastered version for $10 starting October 31, 2024. By raising the price, Sony is likely aiming to discourage players from buying the cheaper version now and upgrading for just $10 later. With the current game priced at $40 and the update priced at $10, the total matches the remastered version’s $50 price, leaving no advantage for early buyers.

On Reddit (in German), opinions are divided. Some comments are understanding and find Sony’s pricing policy normal:

[…] Anyone could buy the game for $20, buy the update for $10 and then get a PS5 game. They would lose $20 for anyone with minimal neurons. EVERY company would do this, so why be surprised?

It’s also worth noting that Sony distributed the game during the pandemic as part of the “Play at Home” promotion, so the standard version should already be available on many consoles. However, several critics accuse Sony of price gouging and pursuing an unnecessary remastering strategy, given that the game is only seven years old and still works well on current consoles.
