In a press release, the Quai d’Orsay stressed that it is in contact with the Lebanese authorities as well as ’s partners in the region, with a view to preventing any potential instability or outbreak of violence. “Messages have been sent to all parties” to encourage restraint, insists the ministry.

The priority remains to guarantee the security of civilians, including that of French nationals present in Lebanon, a particularly important issue in a tense context within the region, according to the Quai d’Orsay.

The latter reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its citizens, while calling for international cooperation to avoid a deterioration of the situation.

The Israeli army officially announced this Saturday that it had “successfully” carried out the assassination of the secretary general of Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, by airstrikes against the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday evening.

Israeli army spokesperson Avichai Adraee said in a post on his X account that the army killed Nasrallah yesterday (Friday), as well as the head of the party’s southern front, Ali Karki, and a certain many other leaders of the organization.

“Air Force planes, under the precise direction of the Military Intelligence Authority, attacked Hezbollah’s central headquarters located under a residential building in the southern suburbs,” the spokesperson added.

The army claimed the bombing was carried out “while Hezbollah leaders were present inside the headquarters and coordinating terrorist activities against Israeli citizens,” it said.

As a reminder, Israel continues its attacks against Hezbollah. Since the resumption of conflict, 726 people have been killed in Lebanon, including women and children, and more than 2,100 have been injured.

Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in a cross-border war since the start of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, which claimed more than 41,500 lives, the majority of them mainly women and children, following the cross-border attack carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

The international community has warned against strikes targeting the territory of Lebanon, as there is a risk of escalation of the Gaza conflict into a regional conflict.
