Dirk Kuyt sees the city derby as an opportunity to make up for a lot at Beerschot: “The fans? They will support us”

The report of the start of the season is painful, the rumbling among the fans even more painful. On Sunday, Beerschot has one of the most important appointments this season: the city derby against Antwerp. Trainer Dirk Kuyt notices that many people are already expecting a defeat for his team. “But for us it is an opportunity to make something right,” says the Dutchman.

“I have experienced many as players, but as a trainer it will be my first.”

Dirk Kuyt is also starting to get the itch for Sunday. Then Beerschot goes to the Bosuil for the city derby against Antwerp.

“That at a special and important moment for the club. We know what it means for the fans. They have been working on it for months. That’s great, these are the matches for which you are a footballer.”

In terms of sport, the PhD candidate had a terrible start with 1 out of 24. Not necessarily a disadvantage, Kuyt knows. “We shouldn’t hide the fact that we expected a better start, but this match is an opportunity to wash away that feeling in one fell swoop.”

“There is a lot of excitement in the group of players. The derby is a huge gift for guys like Sanusi, who worked hard to get back to this level.”

Everyone can now talk very negatively about our supporters after last week, but the fans have continued to support us.

Naturally, the Dutch T1 also has to answer questions about the supporters, who came to lecture players in the mixed zone last week.

“First of all, I would find it crazy if the supporters did not live for their club,” Kuyt answers. “Friends and enemies don’t give us much of a chance. In fact, we have already lost to most of them.”

“That’s why there is so much for us to gain. Above all, we have to show our fans that we will do everything we can and will never stop fighting. That is the least we can do.”

“We talked about it with the playing group. Everyone was disappointed with the result. Then you see emotions. But the players are aware of the opportunity to make things right now. We have to deal with it with foam at the mouth.” coming onto the field and wetting our shirt.”

“Everyone can now talk very negatively about our supporters after last week, but the fans have continued to support us. I am convinced that they will support us if we give everything. I think it is an easy task: just don’t give up.” concludes Dirk Kuyt.

Wondering whether the easy Beerschot assignment also yields points.
