WADA appeals Jannik Sinner’s case, cleared of doping charges

In August, the ITIA revealed that Sinner had tested positive for low levels of clostebol in March, shortly after winning his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. The ITIA cleared Sinner, accepting his explanation that the substance was accidentally introduced into his system by a product used by his physiotherapist to treat a small injury. He only lost ATP ranking points and part of his winnings because one of the positive tests took place at the Indian Wells tournament, where he reached the semi-finals.

This decision by the ITIA could be challenged by both WADA and the Italian anti-doping authorities. In its statement, the World Anti-Doping Agency disagreed, saying “the conclusion of ‘no fault or negligence’ was not correct under the applicable rules.” The Montreal-based agency is therefore requesting a period of ineligibility of one to two years for Sinner, while specifying that it is not calling for the disqualification of its results, with the exception of that already imposed by the court of first instance. .
