After his meeting with Zelensky, Trump assures that he will “solve” the war in Ukraine if he is elected

It promised to be perilous as the presidential candidate had been so critical. Donald Trump received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this Friday at Trump Tower in New York. He came to the United States, where the UN General Assembly is being held, to present his plan for victory, after almost three years of war against Russia.

After this interview, Donald Trump therefore committed to “resolving” the war in Ukraine. “This war should never have taken place, but we will resolve it,” assured the Republican candidate, calling for a “fair agreement for everyone”. Volodymyr Zelensky said he was “grateful” for his “very productive meeting”.

Just before his exchange with the Ukrainian president, Donald Trump had already praised his “very good relationship” with Volodymyr Zelensky – but also with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I hope we have better relations,” reacted the Ukrainian president, visibly embarrassed. Before assuring that he and Donald Trump shared the same objective: “to end the war. »

Tensions before their meeting

Volodymyr Zelensky had met, the day before, American President Joe Biden and his vice-president, candidate for the Democrats for the next presidential election, Kamala Harris. Both gave their support to the Ukrainian president, promising to be by his side until the end.

Last week, the Ukrainian presidency announced that Volodymyr Zelensky planned to meet the former president during his visit to the United States. But this interview was then put on hold, according to the American press, the Republican not having appreciated an interview given by the Ukrainian leader to the New Yorker magazine – in which he asserts that the Republican candidate “does not really know how to stop this war “.

Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that if re-elected, he would resolve the war between Russia and Ukraine “in 24 hours” – without ever explaining how. “I think I will be able to quickly conclude an agreement between President Putin and President Zelensky,” he repeated again on Thursday, assuring that he did not want a “capitulation” of Ukraine, as the says her Democratic rival for the White House, Kamala Harris. The day before, the Republican had directly attacked the Ukrainian leader, accusing him of “refusing to conclude an agreement” with Moscow.
