Worlds: death at 18 of Swiss Muriel Furrer, who fell during the junior road race

The world is in shock. The young Swiss runner Muriel Furrer, 18, who fell during the junior road race at the World Championships this Thursday in Zurich, succumbed to her injuries on Friday.

The UCI (International Cycling Union) announced the sad news in a press release.

“It is with great sadness that the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the Organizing Committee of the World Championships in Zurich (Switzerland) learned today the tragic news of the death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer. The international cycling community has lost a rider with a bright future,” the statement read.

“The 18-year-old rider fell heavily during the junior road race on Thursday and suffered a serious head injury before being taken to hospital by helicopter in a very critical condition. Muriel Furrer unfortunately died at the University Hospital of Zurich”, specifies the UCI, which presents its “sincere condolences to Muriel Furrer’s family, friends and the Swiss Cycling Federation”.

In June 2023, Swiss cycling had already been mourned by the death of Gino Mäder during the Tour de Suisse. This Friday morning, the cyclist’s mother sent a message of encouragement to Muriel Furrer’s family.
