Ex-team boss enthusiastic about successor Daniel Ricciardo: “He really was the real deal”

Liam Lawson will immediately succeed Daniel Ricciardo as permanent driver of the Red Bull F1 team. This decision was officially confirmed by Red Bull yesterday.

Sander Dorsman, team boss of MP Motorsport, calls this transition a logical step. Lawson already drove for MP Motorsport for a season in 2019.

“In 2018 he did very well in Formula 4, and we were already keeping a close eye on him,” Dorsman told Motorsport.com. “Then we heard rumors that Red Bull was going to sign him, and I immediately called Helmut Marko . It was arranged within a day.”

After his successful season in Formula 4, Lawson was given the opportunity to prove himself in Formula 3. It was an important step for him, as he had only just made the transition to European motorsport. In Formula 3 he could compete with other talents.

Dorsman is not surprised that Lawson is now getting the chance in Formula 1. “He was really the real deal,” he says. “He also performed well in Formula 2 in the years that followed.”

With the arrival of Lawson in the Red Bull team, Dorsman hopes that other teams also see the value of Formula 2 talent. “I think this shows that Formula 2 is a fantastic training for Formula 1,” he added.
