The young Swiss Muriel Furrer has died

The press releases the day before had not left much hope. The dreaded news finally came in the middle of the afternoon on Friday. Muriel Furrer, who fell on Thursday in a descent on the course of the Under-19 World Championships around Zurich, was in a very critical condition. Hospitalized, she ultimately did not survive her injuries.

“It is with great sadness that the International Cycling Union and the organizers learned the tragic news of the death of the young Swiss Muriel Furrer,” explained the UCI in a press release which shocked the cycling world. The international cycling community has lost an athlete who had a bright future ahead of her.”

Before giving some details on the terrible accident which cost the life of the woman who lived a few kilometers from the route of this World Cup: “The 18-year-old cyclist fell heavily and suffered serious head injuries. She was taken by helicopter in very critical condition. Muriel Furrer sadly passed away today at the University Hospital of Zurich.”

The UCI and the local organizing committee also offered their condolences to the family and friends of the woman who was racing club with VC Meilen, a local club. The family, who authorized the races to continue despite everything, asked that their privacy be respected in these particularly difficult times. A press conference will be given later today by the International Federation.

Muriel Furrer was twice crowned Swiss junior road race vice-champion in the road race and the time trial last June. The Zurich resident, also prominent in mountain biking – bronze medalist in relay at the last European juniors and 5th in the individual event – and in cyclo-cross since she started on two wheels, finished 44th in the World Championships time ago a few days.
