the Union loses against Fenerbahçe for its entry into contention (2-1, video)

Union Saint-Gilloise lost 2-1 at Fenerbahçe on Thursday evening during the first day of the Europa League league phase in a match with twists and turns that ended ten against ten. The Union initially lacked effectiveness before being completely overwhelmed by the Turks.

The Unionists started the match with a bang, with an opportunity from the start, but Franjo Ivanovic missed a few centimeters to cut the trajectory of a cross (3rd). Ivanovic then hit the post (17th) after eliminating an opponent in two feints. Against the run of play, it was ultimately Fenerbahçe who opened the scoring. After a corner played in three stages, Caglar Soyuncu was found behind the goal and deceived Anthony Moris with a lofted shot (26th).

Fenerbahçe continued to push in the second half and Youssef En-Nesyri created three good situations: he hit over the top (48th), forced Charles Vanhoutte to save the ball on the line from a corner (54th), then alerted Moris header (71st). The Union found it increasingly difficult to contain the opposing attacks and Kevin Mac Allister was directly sent off for a foul on En-Nesyri (73rd).

Fenerbahçe made the break with an own goal from Christian Burgess, who pushed the ball into the back of his net after a save from Moris (82nd). Osayi-Samuel then reignited the suspense by making a mistake in his area and being sent off in turn (90th), but Ivanovic saw his penalty stopped by his compatriot Dominik Livakovic (90th + 2). Ross Sykes finally saved the honor of Saint-Gillois by following Ivanovic’s shot on the post to reduce the score (90th + 3).

For the next day, the Union will host the Norwegians Bodo/Glimt on October 3 at the King Baudouin stadium.
