New York’s Democratic mayor finds himself in turmoil

The mayor seems not to have seen the disgrace coming, even though resignations have multiplied in recent weeks among his entourage. However, the investigation which led to his indictment dates back almost a year. On November 2, 2023, the FBI searched the home of Brianna Suggs, the former director of his electoral campaign, a neophyte then aged 23.

Phone seized without warning

What followed, a few days after this search, was worthy of a… detective film. While he had just given a speech in Manhattan, Eric Adams was taken without warning by FBI agents to his company vehicle. It was inside that he was served with a warrant authorizing the agents to confiscate his phones and other electronic devices. Since then, investigations have not stopped into potentially criminal acts committed by the mayor during his three years in power.

Eric Adams is suspected of having paid for political favors. A construction company, KSK, is in particular in the crosshairs of justice. His offices in Brooklyn were also raided last November, with prosecutors looking into his staff’s contributions to the mayor’s campaign.

A great love for Turkey

But it is also the links forged by Adams with Turkey that are of interest. The mayor makes no secret of his excellent relations with the Turkish community of New York, as with their original homeland, which he prides himself on having visited six or seven times – including at least one at the invitation of the consulate of Turkey to conclude a twinning with a district of Istanbul. Justice is questioning possible illegal financing of his campaign by Turkish interests.

Eric Adams protests his honesty and denounces a plot hatched by enemies who, according to him, have never missed an opportunity to pick on him, particularly because of his disturbing lifestyle – the mayor is a night owl who spends without spending money. count. From the insecurity in the subway to the influx of migrants (sent to New York by Republican mayors and governors from the South), the fact is also that Adams has not significantly improved the daily lives of his fellow citizens.

The mayor has so far ruled out resigning. Should he ultimately do so, the interim would be assumed by Jumaane D. Williams, who serves as New York’s “public defender” (mediator or ombudsman), until a special election is held to designate a successor.
