Oil and natural gas down in Q2

Consolidated production of extractive activities fell during the second quarter, the second consecutively.

According to the General Directorate of Economy and Fiscal Policy (DGEPF) in its latest economic report, the production index lost 7.7%, exacerbating the situation recorded in the previous quarter. This poor orientation of production sold is a consequence of the poor results of oil and natural gas due to the incidents recorded.

Indeed, after five consecutive quarters of increases, the oil production index turned around by 10.8% during the second quarter of 2024. This observed decline was influenced by operational incidents causing the poor production orientation of 5 operators over the period under review (Perenco, Assala, Vaalco, BWE, Addax Petroleum).

Thus, the incident at the Becuna site and the problems encountered by BWE have contributed very significantly to the decline in oil production. Over the six months, however, production increased by 8.9%, again linked to the good performance of mature fields and the ramp-up of new wells. As for marketed natural gas, it fell by 0.9% during the second quarter of the current year.

This downturn in activity follows the technical difficulties recorded, in connection with the updating of pipelines and other equipment used to transport gas. Over the half-year period, production consolidated by 26.2%, driven by a good order book.
