The Carrare building in Échirolles is under high surveillance. This Wednesday, September 25, in the afternoon, a dozen national police officers reinforced by CRS teams secured the surroundings of the building, considered a major drug dealing point in the metropolitan area.

Inside the buildings, police officers from the Grenoble BAC monitored the comings and goings of individuals in one of the 80 apartments before witnessing a transaction between a trafficker and his client.

“The lookout was arrested and an apartment was searched,” says a police source. Inside, three men were arrested and a significant quantity of narcotics was seized: “97 doses of cocaine and 80 bags of resin”according to the same source. The four men, aged 16, 21, 38 and 48, were taken into police custody.

This large-scale operation is being carried out in order to eradicate drug trafficking in Carrara. “There is no question of giving in, we are all determined to see this through to the end, and we will be uncompromising towards anyone who tries to enter the building once it is sealed.”declared Gilles Bonaventura, head of the municipal police in Échirolles, that same morning.

The police operation follows two orders to secure and evacuate the building issued by the mayor of Échirolles, Amandine Demore, requiring residents to leave their homes within 72 hours and for three weeks.

The decision was taken after several expert assessments carried out since last April. These had highlighted “that the safety of residents cannot be guaranteed due to the risk of fire and electricity, and that they are exposed to a ‘permanent danger of death’.”

A situation which, according to the mayor of Échirolles, was the result of the significant drug trafficking taking place within the building. This evacuation of the building “is also part of the solution to remove the Carrara drug dealing point from the hands of traffickers”declared the public prosecutor of Grenoble, Eric Vaillant.
