IN PICTURES – In flood after Storm Boris, the Danube besieges Budapest

As a result of Storm Boris, the Danube overflowed in Budapest.

The river’s water level was close to the 2013 record before starting to fall on Saturday.

The waters of the Danube reached this Saturday, September 21, a level not seen in ten years in Budapest after the passage of the storm Boris in central Europe. Thus, the water of the river rose to a level close to the record of 2013 in the Hungarian capital, giving to see spectacular images.

The water began to recede on Saturday after peaking at 830 cm in the capital. The water flooded the lower reaches of homes along the Danube, just north of Budapest. In the town of Szentendre, residents travelled by canoe.

The swollen river has flooded the dike, with waters reaching the steps of the Parliament as seen in the photos above. Hungarian authorities are now hoping that the dikes will hold in the coming days. The focus has been on the city “on flood control”, according to the Prime Minister.

Viktor Orban inspected the work being done to protect Budapest from flooding on Saturday. Like under the Széchenyi Bridge that you can see above, where a tunnel is protected by sandbags. According to the latest report, 24 people have died in Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania in the bad weather caused by Storm Boris.
