Champions League: Monaco and its Swiss devour a Barça reduced to ten

Maghnes Akliouche led AS Monaco to a prestigious victory against FC Barcelona on the first day of the Champions League on Thursday evening.

Monaco inflicted on Barça – who have had a perfect start to the league with five wins in a row – their first defeat of the season, this Thursday evening during the first day of the Champions League. The team of Philipp Köhn, Denis Zakaria (captain) and Breel Embolo (starter and replaced in the 59th minute) won 2-1 at home.

With a numerical advantage from the 10th minute after Eric Garcia was sent off, the Monegasques opened the scoring through Maghnes Akliouche (16th minute) before conceding the equaliser through Lamine Yamal (28th minute). They regained the lead as the last quarter of an hour approached, thanks to George Ilenikhena (71st minute), and did not relinquish it after that.

It was a great evening for French clubs as Brest, in their first match in the most prestigious European Cup, won against the Austrians of Sturm Graz (2-1), where the new Swiss international Grégory Wüthrich plays (taken off on a stretcher in the 10th minute after injuring his knee when he fell). The only downside for the Breton side was the own goal conceded by the Valais midfielder Edimilson Fernandes, who gave up his place in the 72nd minute.

Earlier, theBayer Leverkusen did not miss their return to the Champions League. Granit Xhaka (replaced in the 81st minute) and his teammates outclassed Feyenoord Rotterdam of Jordan Lotomba (starter and replaced in the 61st) in the Netherlands (0-4). Florian Wirtz opened the scoring in the 5th minute and scored twice in the 36th. Meanwhile, Benfica won in Belgrade at Red Star (1-2) thanks to Kerem Aktürkoglu (30th) and Orkun Kokcu (30th). Substitute at kick-off, Zeki Amdouni came on at the very end of the match (88th), just after Felicio Milson reduced the score (86th).

In the other matches, Arsenal fell to a 0-0 draw in Bergamo against Atalanta and Atlético Madrid beat Leipzig 2-1 thanks to a goal at the end of regulation time from José María Giménez.
