Alsatian MP Patrick Hetzel soon to join government?

The new government will be unveiled before Sunday. Yesterday, the Prime Minister spoke with President Emmanuel Macron to present a list of names and among them, an Alsatian elected official, Patrick Hetzel.

The Republican MP for Saverne was academy rector, education advisor to François Fillon at Matignon and director general for higher education until 2012.
Close to the new Prime Minister Michel Barner, it was therefore natural that his name came up to occupy the position of Minister Delegate for Higher Education and Research.
Nothing official for the moment, Emmanuel Macron still has to validate the proposed names.

Who is Patrick Hetzel?

The son of a restaurateur, he grew up in Sarre-Union. His mother tongue is Alsatian and it was only at school that he learned French. Very involved in the associative environment since his studies in , he was notably president of the General Federation of Students of Strasbourg.

In 2007, François Fillon became Prime Minister and Patrick Hetzel his advisor in charge of education, teaching and research issues. In particular, he coordinated the government’s bill on universities. This law was the first adopted during Nicolas Sarkozy’s five-year term. He then joined Valérie Pécresse, then Minister of Higher Education and Research, by becoming Director General of Higher Education.

After his years of service to the State, Patrick Hetzel wanted to get more involved locally. He was elected deputy for the 7th constituency of Bas-Rhin on June 17, 2012, re-elected in 2017 and then in 2024 during the early legislative elections.
