Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko chaired the interministerial meeting on Thursday on the preparation of the 2024-2025 school year. Recommendations were made, including on the wearing of clothing. In order to ensure the conditions for inclusive education, guaranteeing free access for all children to school, without any distinction, particularly regarding the wearing of clothing, the head of government questioned the Minister of National Education on the issue. Moustapha Guirassy will have to submit, by September 27, 2024 at the latest, an order inviting schools to comply with their internal regulations with the provisions of the constitution.
In Ousmane Sonko’s opinion, beyond these uniforms, the State must ensure the eradication of all forms of discrimination against students in relation to the way they wear clothes. “We are in a country where the State, unfortunately, shows a lot of weakness. And everyone regulates in their own way. In other countries, when it is decreed that a certain type of clothing is not authorized, everyone complies. In the Republic, it works that way. I urge you to present us with a decree as soon as possible that regulates this issue, so that no student can be discriminated against on this basis. This regulation must be applied by all schools, including those called foreign. They are on Senegalese soil because only diplomatic representations are considered foreign lands. So they will apply what Senegal has decided,” said the Prime Minister, who spoke at length about the major measures taken for a successful school year.
