Jeremy Dutcher wins 2024 Polaris Music Prize | Fil Culturel atuvu.ca – News

The Polaris Music Prize gala took place Tuesday night at Massey Hall in Toronto and awarded Jeremy Dutcher for the best Canadian album of the year, for the second time in his career, a first in the history of the award.

It was after several live performances that the Montreal-based artist won the $50,000 prize for his album Motewolonuwok which features songs in both the Wolastoqey and English languages. Jeremy Dutcher became the first artist to win the Polaris Music Prize for a second time. He won the coveted award in 2018 for his album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, sung entirely in his native language.

The artist therefore succeeds the previous winner Debby Friday and her album Good Luck and joins other winners such as Kaytranada, Pierre Kwenders, Arcade Fire, Karkwa and Patrick Watson.

As a reminder, the Polaris Music Prize is an award given by a jury made up of journalists, broadcasters, bloggers and programmers across Canada.

This year, although no French-language albums were included in the selection, the ten finalists included singer-songwriter and producer Inuk Élisapie, Allison Russell and Charlotte Cardin, who was scheduled to perform at the gala but had to cancel her appearance after contracting COVID-19.

Other finalists included Canadian DJ BAMBII, Patrick Flegel’s hypnagogic drag queen pop project Cindy Lee, hip-hop rap artist DijahSB, garage punk band NOBRO, rock band The Beaches and rapper TOBi.
