Arrens-Marsous. A day to discover living heritage

the essential
September 21, 2024. Local agricultural know-how is highlighted on the occasion of Heritage Day.

Organised by the town hall of Arrens-Marsous, the heritage day will focus on mountain agriculture, pastoralism and transhumance.

This living heritage from a cultural legacy uses ancestral know-how, including transhumance which was recognized as part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity in December 2023.

The objectives of this day are multiple:

to introduce the work of local breeders by showing the specificities of breeding practices in mountain areas; to explain what pastoralism is, to make known the reasons for transhumance; to inform about the impact that these agricultural practices have on the landscapes that they shape and maintain, the environment and how they participate in the preservation of it. For a visual and more fun approach to these activities, different visits are planned on sites: in summer pastures, in hay meadows, on farms and on processing workshops. It will also be a question of showing the diversity of products from sheep, goat, horse breeding, beekeeping and also dairy products and meats.

The program for the day: Meet at 9:30 am at the Arrens-Marsous village hall. At 10 am a meeting with the breeders will take place on two summer pasture areas. On this occasion, the role of the municipality in the management of the summer pastures will be explained, followed by a reading of the pastoral landscape where an exchange on the theme of tourism will take place by the CAUE 65 (Architecture, Urban Planning and Environment Council of the Hautes-Pyrénées) and finally a visit to a milking hut will conclude this discovery outing on site.

The return to the village is planned for noon around the producers’ market which will be set up on the village square. Under a marquee, the public will be able to discover the exhibition of the GIP-CRPGE 65 (Resource Center on Pastoralism and Space Management 65).

At noon: shared meal. Bring your picnic.

The afternoon will be devoted to visits to the farm.

The chop evening, organized by the festival committee, will take place in the festival hall.

On the program: 7 p.m. aperitif followed by the meal and the ball from 11 p.m., hosted by Event Py’s.
