Morocco takes part in the 8th edition of the water week in India

The Moroccan delegation, led by Omar Chafki, Director of the Bouregreg and Chaouia Water Basin Agency, and composed of Salaheddine Dahbi, Director of the Oum Er-Rbia Basin Agency, Moulay Driss Hasnaoui, Project Officer at the Directorate of Water Research and Planning, and Moulay Aziz Drissi Yahyaoui, Head of the Cooperation Department, joins experts, decision-makers and officials from all over the world to discuss major issues related to water resource management.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Indian President Droupadi Murmu stressed that the objective of the event is to promote inclusive development and management of water resources, highlighting partnership and cooperation as the key means to achieve this.

Ms. Murmu further recalled the crucial importance of reducing water scarcity for humanity, stressing that the Sustainable Development Goals emphasize the participation of local communities in water and sanitation management.

The Indian President also warned against inefficient management of water resources and stressed the importance of responsible use of water, especially in agriculture, industry and energy production.

The event, which runs until next Friday, represents an international platform where more than 5,000 participants discuss crucial issues such as water security, sustainability of water resources and resilience to climate risks.

Topics such as collaboration for integrated water resources management, infrastructure challenges and innovative approaches to water-related disaster management are also at the centre of the discussions.

Morocco and India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on December 14 in New Delhi to strengthen their cooperation in the field of water resources. This partnership covers several key areas, such as the design, construction and maintenance of hydraulic infrastructure, including large dams and water transfer projects.

It also includes integrated water resources management, flood and drought prevention and management, as well as sustainable development and groundwater management.

The agreement also focuses on rainwater harvesting and recovery, as well as resilience and adaptation to climate change. In addition, it encourages cooperation between the water basin agencies of the two countries, in order to share expertise in integrated water resources management within the water basins. This Memorandum of Understanding also led to the creation of a joint working group on water resources.
