Miami Heat supports Haiti after Donald Trump’s comments

A week after the US presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, the Haitian community is plagued by threats following unfounded accusations made by the former President of the United States. The Miami Heat has decided to break its silence.

“They eat dogs! They eat cats! They eat pets!”

This shocking phrase – uttered by Donald Trump during the US presidential debate on September 10 – has gone around the world. The community targeted? Immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio, and more specifically Haitian refugees. The latter have felt very threatened since then and 33 bomb threats have even been recorded in the city.

Unfortunately, these abuses do not stop at the borders of Springfield. In Miami, Florida, where the Haitian community is large, verbal attacks and threats have also been observed. So much so that the Heat franchise decided to publish a statement to support the Haitians.

“The Miami Heat staff, like the city of Miami itself, is a diverse and vibrant mix of cultures, including many members of our Haitian community. The false narrative surrounding them is hurtful and offensive and has unfortunately made innocent people the targets of hateful speech and physical threats.

Our Haitian employees, fans and friends deserve better.

Now we can do it [l’union fait la force, ndlr.]”

Other big names – like Springfield native John Legend – have condemned Trump’s racist comments as baseless.

No incidents involving dogs or cats have been reported in Springfield, according to city police officers.
