Did PSG forget about Mbappé’s departure by his team? Luis Enrique responds

At a press conference on Tuesday on the eve of the reception of Girona in the Champions League, Luis Enrique and Marquinhos praised PSG’s collective project this season.

PSG are preparing to play a new Champions League campaign, the first since 2016-2017 without Kylian Mbappé. On the eve of the meeting against Girona (Wednesday at 9 p.m.) for the first day of the league phase, Luis Enrique returned in filigree, on the departure of the French striker and the supposed benefits of a more collective project.

“I like what I see now.”

“It is important to evaluate the present and that goes through a clear project defined last season,” Luis Enrique said in a press conference. “But to draw conclusions, we have to wait a few months or even the end of the season and perhaps several seasons to see if this idea has been able to be carried out.”

At the start of the season, the Spanish coach had indicated that he preferred to have four players each capable of scoring 11 goals rather than one who scored 44 like Mbappé last season. “What I see now, that’s a certainty if we compare it to last season, pleases me. I made a good decision by coming to a club like PSG,” added Luis Enrique. “We have to continue to meet expectations.”

Marquinhos also highlights the collective project

Re-elected captain of PSG, Marquinhos also highlighted this collective aspect. “The coach has experience and knows very well what he is saying. He knew that other players would show themselves and that opportunities would open up for the players in attack,” recalled the Brazilian defender. “That’s what’s happening: the players are scoring, are happy and confident. That’s the most important thing.”

At the start of the season, Bradley Barcola has found the net four times in the league, compared to three goals for Ousmane Dembélé. But he will now have to confirm this over time and in big matches. “The coach is increasingly bringing us into the philosophy he wants for the team and the club. It is increasingly a collective philosophy, that is the direction we are moving in,” concluded Marquinhos. “The results and performances, we will see, but that will be the best answer.”
