“Shogun”: Sanada Hiroyuki crowned best actor at the Emmys, a first for a Japanese

On September 15, the 76th^e Emmy Awards ceremony, during which Shogun won 18 awards in total (including 14 Creative Arts Emmy Awards), a record for a single season.

Sanada Hiroyuki, who also produced the series, received the award for best actor in a drama series, a first for a Japanese at the event. Sawai Anna won best actress in a drama series, and Frederick EO Toye won the Emmy for best directing in a drama series.

Finally, Shogun received the award for best drama series.

Shogun is based on the novel by James Clavell and is produced by FX, a Walt Disney Company, and airs on Disney+. The action takes place in Japan on the eve of the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), a popular period in Japanese national television historical dramas.

After receiving his award, Sanada thanked everyone involved in the historical dramas: “The passion and dreams I inherited from you have crossed borders and oceans.”
