Spain welcomes Morocco's efforts to curb migration attempts via Ceuta

The Spanish Interior Ministry has praised Morocco's “great efforts” along the border perimeter to prevent the entry of migrants into Ceuta, stressing that cooperation with Moroccan security forces is “ongoing.” The EFE news agency, citing sources from the ministry, reported the absence of any entry into Ceuta on Sunday.

The border perimeter is under surveillance by state security forces and agencies, with Morocco ensuring the immediate return of those who attempt to cross the fence. The Spanish Ministry of Fernando Grande-Marlaska described these efforts as “remarkable”, having helped to control the situation, in addition to the cooperation between Moroccan and Spanish security personnel.

Meanwhile, the Spanish government delegation in Ceuta confirmed that surveillance operations carried out by Morocco had managed to prevent migrants from entering the city from Sunday to Monday morning, despite dozens being spotted near the border fence.

Sources from the delegation told EFE that the efforts of the Moroccan forces had thwarted any attempt to arrive by swimming or through the double land barrier. The sources also indicated that the Tarajal post would be closed intermittently if necessary, to control entries and prevent the disruption of the regular circulation of vehicles and people, near the customs.

Javier Ortega Smith, Vox MP in Ceuta, reported that Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska (PSOE) had contacted the Moroccan government, asking it to “mobilise all security and armed forces” for this purpose.

In recent days, hundreds of people have gathered in Fnideq and surrounding areas, following calls made via social networks to head towards the border fence in Ceuta on Sunday, September 15.
