What's happening in Germany? Explosion sends shivers down police spines

On Monday morning, shortly after 7 a.m., the center of the German city of Cologne was rocked by an explosion.

The explosion is believed to have taken place in a nightclub in the Hohenzollernring district, between Rudolfplatz and Ehrenstrasse. Police were mobilised en masse and immediately cordoned off a large area around the establishment. In some photos, it is clearly possible to see how parts of the building, including the ceiling and side walls, were destroyed.

The incident remains unclear. Police are calling on the public to avoid the area. Surveillance footage shows a man leaving a bag at the entrance to the establishment before the explosion. It is not yet known whether the suspect may have had accomplices.
