Here are the 5 major new features

As announced during its back-to-school keynote, Apple rolled out, this Monday, September 16, 2024, the iOS 18 version on all compatible models, from the iPhone XR to the iPhone 16, freshly unveiled and marketed from September 20. Richer in new features than iOS 17, this iteration of the operating system is not delivered in its entirety, with certain features powered by Apple Intelligence, the firm's AI model, being deployed later.

But rest assured: iOS 18 includes several significant additions from its launch, the outlines of which we present to you in this article.

The 5 major new features with iOS 18

1. A redesign of the Photos app

iOS 18 version introduces ““the biggest evolution of the Photos app yet”Apple boasts in a blog post. While retaining an interface “familiar design” In grid form, the application integrates a more efficient automatic classification system, which sorts photos by subjects or themes (Travel, People and animals, etc.). It is also possible to pin your Collections or consult a carousel compiling your best shots daily.

2. A more customizable home screen

With iOS 18, and it's a small revolution for iPhone owners, the home screen grid becomes more flexible and customizable. It is now possible to reorganize the layout of the icons, even if it means leaving empty spaces. The update also allows you to enlarge the size of application icons, hide their titles, colorize them or adapt their appearance to the screen mode (Automatic, Dark Or Clear).

3. A series of features for iMessage

Apple's messaging app, which may seem outdated compared to services like WhatsApp or Signal, is reinventing itself in this update. In addition to the long-awaited support for the RCS (Rich Communication Services) protocol, iMessage now offers the ability to schedule the sending of a message, without using the Shortcuts app, thanks to the feature Send laterIt also introduces animation effects for messages, as well as a feature to send a message via satellite, in case of unavailability of the Wi-Fi or cellular network.

4. The Passwords app

Apple devices now have a password manager. This application, installed by default, aims to provide a secure space for your credentials “with end-to-end encryption and constant synchronization,” explains the firm. Protected by Face ID, the Passwords application groups your access keys, validation codes, Wi-Fi passwords in separate folders and alerts you in the event of a breach, such as when you reuse a password. “And if you use autofill, they are added directly to the app”Apple adds.

5. A feature to lock and hide apps

This update helps secure most of your apps, including those downloaded from the App Store, with Face ID or a passcode. Even better, if you have things to hide: third-party apps can be hidden from the home screen, and only become accessible by going through the Maskeditself protected by Face ID.
