Tito Jackson, brother of Michael and father of the short-lived 3T, left the scene on September 15

Oklahoma (© 2024 Afriquinfos)- While he was on stage with his brothers Jackie and Marlon a few days ago, Tito Jackson, emblematic member of the Jackson 5, died of a heart attack this Sunday, September 15 at the wheel. Backing singer and guitarist in this legendary group, founded in 1964 with his brothers (Jackie, Germaine, Marlon and Michael), Tito Jackson leaves behind his three famous sons, TJ, Taj and Taryll. The latter created the group 3T in 1994, a group of which he was the manager.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Tito Jackson (…) is no longer with us. We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being” they wrote in a statement shared on Instagram.

Tito Jackson’s cause of death has not yet been released, but Steve Manning has suggested that his friend suffered a heart attack while driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma. The artist’s death is all the more sudden given that just a few days ago he was on stage with his brothers Jackie and Marlon (73 and 67) for a summer tour of Europe.

Tito was the third child of the Jackson couple, and had nine brothers and sisters. At the age of 10, he broke one of the strings on his father Joe’s guitar, who then discovered that Tito was a talented guitarist and bought him his own instrument. He then had the idea of forming a band consisting of five of his brothers, of which he became the manager.

Four years later, their arrival at the Motown record company opened the doors to success: the Jackson 5 became the first group in history to start their career with four consecutive number 1 songs: the hits I want you back, ABC, The love you save and I’ll be there. The Jackson 5 were one of the first African-American groups to have success with the general public, contributing to the fight against racism.

A solo career until 2023

In 1976, after ten studio albums, the brothers moved to Epic Records. Jermaine Jackson left the group, remaining with Motown, while Randy Jackson replaced him, forming a new group called The Jacksons who released five albums before Michael and Marlon left the group, which attempted to survive by recording the commercially unsuccessful album 2300 Jackson Street.

For Michael Jackson’s 30th birthday, the group reformed in 2001 for a TV special, then the four older brothers including Tito went on tour after the star’s death in 2012. Tito also began a solo career in 2003 as a blues musician, and released two albums in 2016 and 2021, collaborating with Stevie Wonder. In 2023, he released a new single, Attitude. During his career, he has been nominated three times for Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Jackson 5.

On September 8, the Jacksons performed in Surrey, England. They then stopped by Munich, Germany, where they visited a memorial for their brother Michael Jackson together. We are deeply grateful for this special place that honors not only his memory but our shared heritage. Thank you for keeping his spirit alive. “, Tito commented on his social networks. The trio was expected for other shows in the United States at the end of October.
