P-to-P, May 09, 2023 [AlterPresse] — The death, on Sunday, May 7, 2023, in Puerto Rico, of the Haitian human rights activist, Sylvie Tourdot Wadestrandt Bajeux, constitutes a huge loss for the human rights sector in Haiti, declares, on the AlterPresse / AlterRadio platform , the executive director of the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (Rnddh), Pierre Espérance.
Sylvie Tourdot Wadestrandt Bajeux has devoted her entire life to fighting impunity, social injustice and corruption. She also fought for the rule of law and the strengthening of institutions, argues the Rnddh.
“The Haitian human rights sector is in mourning. Sylvie Bajeux was one of the leaders of the Ecumenical Center for Human Rights (Cedh), a member of the International Federation for Human Rights (Fidh), of which the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (Rnddh) is a member”, stresses Pierre Espérance.
Having left the country in 2018 due to health problems, Sylvie Bajeux went to Puerto Rico, where she lived with her family.
On Monday, December 2, 2013, the former director of the Ecumenical Center for Human Rights (Cedh), Sylvie Bajeux, received the signet ring of the Legion of Honor, the highest honorary decoration granted by the French Republic.
With this medal of the Legion of Honor, it was a question of honoring “his commitment, of a lifetime, in the fight against dictatorship, against injustice and for the protection of human rights”.
Man of letters and emblematic figure of the fight for human rights in Haiti, Jean-Claude Bajeux, her husband, died on August 5, 2011 in Haiti.
“Jean Claude Bajeux, through his commitments to fight against impunity and defend human rights, went into exile during the Duvalier regime (September 22, 1957 – February 7, 1986). One of the causes of his death was the return of Jean-Claude Duvalier to Haiti in 2011, with complete impunity and without concern,” says the executive director of Rnddh, Pierre Espérance.
Today, there are more human rights organizations. But, at the same time, there is more impunity, more trivialization of life and institutions, including the gangsterization of the country, deplores the Rnddh.
The National Network for the Defense of Human Rights calls on human rights organizations to denounce acts of barbarism and to be more firm in working together and defending their rights. [je emb rc apr 09/05/2023 16:00]
