A queen stage designed like the one that cost the life of Gino Mäder on the Tour of Switzerland, with a downhill finish, after the terrible Kolovrat pass.
Alone in the lead of the race, Filippo Zana missed a bend there and pulled straight into the ravine, performing a sunburst and scaring a horse in the process. Fortunately, the Italian champion, winner of a stage of the last Giro, got up directly, went to recover his bike a little lower and then went back on the road to continue his race.
The victory finally went to his teammate Jesus David Pena while Zana, thanks to his second place, took the leader’s jersey. The Jayco AlUla team is therefore doing very well, but the whole cycling world got a real scare the day after the death of Gino Mäder.
On Sunday, the 5th and last stage of the 29th Tour of Slovenia between Vrhnika and Novo Mesto (142.6 km) will offer two climbs: the first in Zaplana, a 3rd category pass of 7.7 km at 4.7% at the start of the stage and the second 15 kilometers from the finish in Trska Gora, a 3rd category climb of 1.7 km at 9.8%.
Absent this year, Tadej Pogacar has won the last two editions of the Tour.
