Union Saint-Gilloise equals its largest victory of the season and secures its place on the podium

The Union won 0-4 at Beerschot. A match that quickly ended.

After the swamps of the King Baudouin Stadium, the Union was delighted to inaugurate the new pitch at Beerschot, the pitch at Kiel had also been transformed into a sandy trap over the winter. For this meeting in Antwerp, Sébastien Pocognoli confirmed the young Kamiel Van de Perre (appeared to his advantage against Braga) in the midfield despite the return of Charles Vanhoutte. It was Anouar Ait El Hadj who slipped on the bench. In the opposite camp, we noted the first tenure of Hakim Sahabo, on loan from Standard.

Pushed by his supporters, the Beerschot started his match perfectly, with a lot of desire and a physical response which sometimes upset the visitors. In the first moments, Kosiah presented himself against Anthony Moris but pushed his ball too long.

Undoubtedly already the turning point of the match, because the Union seized their first opportunity well. A quarter of an hour into the game, Franjo Ivanovic once again proved his skill in the last gesture by heading a cross from Vanhoutte at the far post to lob Nick Shinton and open the scoring.

The Saint-Gillois were launched: in the wake of the first goal, Sébastien Pocognoli’s men made the break directly with a good effort from Niang, who fixed his opponent at the entrance to the rectangle before curling into the small net (18th, 0-2).

All the hopes of Antwerp’s good first quarter of an hour collapsed. Especially since at the half-hour mark, Beerschot was even reduced to ten following the exclusion of Faisal Al-Ghamdifirst yellowed then excluded after the VAR intervention for a very nasty sole from behind on Niang’s ankle.

Union without forcing

In numerical superiority for an hour of play, the Union quickly took advantage with a third goal, again signed by Ivanovic on a good cross from Anan Khalaili. 0-3 at rest, the score could even have been heavier without the failures of the Croatian and Promise David in the small rectangle at the end of the first act.

Enough to offer us a fairly empty second period, with visitors on the ball but without the need to press on. The 0-4, however, fell as the last 20 minutes approached the feet of Promise Davidwell launched from deep, a goal first canceled for offside, then finally validated by the VAR.

The Unionists signed their biggest victory of the season (with the 4-0 inflicted on Genk) against a team from Beerschot who had been undefeated at home since September. Enough to take three points ahead of Antwerp and ensure that they end the day on the podium ahead of Anderlecht, who are playing straight away against Mechelen. Beerschot remains stuck in the red zone.
