The Central African Republic (CAR) benefited from the Russia a donation of 30,000 tonnes of diesel. A symbolic gesture which aimed to support the country’s energy needs. This support was announced during the official visit of President Faustin-Archange Touadéra to Moscow. But the fuel load is currently stuck at the port of Douala, Cameroon, due to international sanctions imposed on Russia. The Cameroonian authorities justify this blockage by the obligation to respect the restrictive measures taken by the UNITED STATES and theEuropean Union against Moscow.
International sanctions, which mainly aim to restricting economic exchanges with Russia also affect third countries like Cameroon, forced to comply with the restrictions. By Albert Mokpeme Yalokspokesperson for the Central African presidency, confirmed that it is these same sanctions which are blocking the cargo in Douala. Although these measures are applied to Russia for geopolitical reasons, they have a collateral impact on countries like the CAR, which depend on external aid to overcome their crisis.
In the context of this crisis, the Russia continues to support the CAR, particularly in the energy sector. In addition to donating diesel, Moscow is working to formalize a mechanism to ensure regular fuel deliveries to the Central African Republic. This project aims to create long-term commercial cooperation between the two countries, allowing the CAR to guarantee a stable supply of fuel. The objective is to strengthen the country’s energy autonomy, a key element for its reconstruction. The support of the Russiaalthough criticized by certain international actors, contributes to Moscow’s growing influence in Central Africa, while offering the CAR a solution to its energy shortages. However, the current impasse in Douala demonstrates how complex the situation is.
