Western intelligence services have recently had to revise their accusations regarding the Russia in the case of submarine cables damaged in Baltic Sea. According to a Washington Post report, no evidence has been able to establish the involvement of Moscow in these incidents, which would rather be due to accidents caused by inexperienced crews on poorly maintained ships.

Maria Zakharovaspokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, reacted strongly to these revelations by demanding an official apology from Western officials. She notably stressed that the West had, once again, named culprits before any in-depth investigation had even begun. Today, Moscow therefore wishes to be cleared of any possible suspicions.

Diplomatic tensions intensify

The world is currently going through a period of intense international tensions where the slightest accusations can have major repercussions on global stability. In this context, the hasty and unfounded accusations only exacerbate the already tense relations between the different powers and in particular the West and Russia.

The incident initially grew in scope following the damage noted on the EstLink 2 power cable connecting Finland to Estonia in December. The Finnish authorities then accused an oil tanker registered in the Cook Islands, suspected of belonging to a “ ghost fleet“. This situation even led German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to call for new sanctions against Russia.

The importance of caution in this type of investigation

Faced with these accusations, the Russian Foreign Ministry is now demanding official denials from those who accused Moscow without tangible evidence. A situation which highlights, once again, the importance of a measured and fact-based approach in international relations, particularly in times of heightened geopolitical tensions.
