Saturday night, the Canadian dominated the Leafs in the first period.

Kirby Dach, Patrik Laine and Josh Anderson scored, giving CH a 3-0 lead at one point in the first period.

That’s where Ryan Reaves approached Arber Xhekaj to ask if he wanted to drop the gloves. Xhekaj told him no… Pointing at the scoreboard at the same time.

The Leafs player returned to what happened and obviously, he took advantage of the opportunity to taunt the Canadian defender.

Reaves argues that Xhekaj looked bad in the context of the Leafs scoring seven unanswered goals to ultimately win the game by a score of 7-3:

You point at the scoreboard and you get scored seven goals afterwards. You look bad. –Ryan Reaves

It’s certain that Xhekaj’s reaction after Reaves’ request whipped the Leafs.

Every time a player makes a gesture like that in sport, it provokes a reaction after all…

But on the other hand, Xhekaj was right in a sense because he had no interest in hurting his club when the score was 3-0 in favor of the Canadian.

He didn’t want to fight to change the momentum sideways… But despite everything, that’s exactly what happened in the end.

That said, Ryan Reaves could have saved himself a little embarrassment too because it’s not like he contributed to his team’s victory.

He didn’t play more than seven minutes in the game (6:38), he was held off the scoresheet and he finished the game with a differential of 0.

But hey. It’s true that with hindsight, Arber Xhekaj should perhaps have avoided pointing the scoreboard at his opponent.

The Canadian defender should have simply refused the invitation without necessarily being slobbery… And it backfired on him in the end.
