Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday ordered an immediate investigation into the violence which left eight people dead at a mining site. The operating company will have to finance medical and funeral expenses.

An investigation has been launched after the death of eight people during violent clashes in the Obuasi gold mine, in southern Ghana, the presidency announced on Sunday in a press release received by APA.

President John Dramani Mahama demands that “ individuals who acted illegally are brought to justice » after these incidents which allegedly involved illegal miners. The exact circumstances of this violence, which occurred on this site operated by the mining giant Anglo-Gold Ashanti, have not been specified by the authorities.

Immediately, the Ghanaian government says it has ordered security forces to regain control of the area and prevent any further escalation. At the same time, Anglo-Gold Ashanti will have to cover all the medical costs of the injured and contribute to the victims’ funerals.
