This Monday, January 20, 2025 marks “Blue Monday”, often referred to as the most depressing day of the year. But where does this concept come from, and above all, how to overcome this blues?
The term “Blue Monday” was popularized in 2005 by a British advertising campaign. According to a mathematical formula, this day would fall each year on the third Monday in January. Factors considered include lack of light, winter weather, previously abandoned resolutions, holiday spending and returning to work. Although this theory has no serious scientific basis, it reflects a feeling often shared at the start of the year.
Why does this time seem more difficult? In January, the short and gray days are sometimes accompanied by a drop in energy and morale. Added to this are the end of the holidays, falling bills and a pace of life that becomes more monotonous again.
5 tips to combat Blue Monday blues
1- Expose yourself to natural light. Going outside even on cloudy days or using a light therapy lamp can help compensate for the lack of sunlight, which is often responsible for low morale.
2- Practice physical activity. Moving releases endorphins, feel-good hormones. A simple walk, yoga session or jogging can be enough to boost your mood.
3- Set small, realistic goals. Successfully completing a task, even a simple one, can restore a feeling of accomplishment. Don’t hesitate to set yourself accessible challenges to regain self-confidence.
-4- Share a moment with your loved ones. Spending time with friends, family or even interacting with colleagues can break the monotony and strengthen social connections, essential to well-being.
5- Have fun. Prepare your favorite meal, watch a movie that makes you laugh, or take a hot bath. These little pleasures can have a significant impact on your morale.
What if we changed perspective?
Rather than giving in to the idea of a “most depressing day,” why not turn Blue Monday into an opportunity for self-care? After all, the start of the year can also be the perfect time to cultivate new, positive habits. Blue Monday depression is therefore not inevitable; with a few adjustments and a little kindness, this day could well become an opportunity to turn the page towards a bright year!
