“We were very hot, for my part I could have died of asphyxiation! When I smelled smoke in my room, there was so much smoke in the hallway that I couldn’t get out. So I went to the window to breathe and scream for help, waving a small flashlight at the back of the building. Fortunately, my friends spotted me from downstairs, then the firefighters evacuated me with the ladder through this window on the first floor”, testifies Louis (55 years old), resident for two years at the Jean-Marie-Tjibaou home, a CHRS (accommodation and social reintegration center) for people in distress, whom the Espoir association helps to regain personal and social autonomy.
