Gasoline: why prices at the pump have started to rise again since the start of 2025

the essential
Fuel prices have been increasing for several weeks and no fuel is exempt from the increase. How is it explained? Do we know how long it could last?

In both oil tanker and mass retail service stations, it is impossible to escape the trend. Refueling at the pump has cost more since the beginning of January 2025. All fuels are affected.

The average price per liter was €1.888 per SP98; €1,787 for the SP95-E10; €1.736 for diesel and €0.804 for E85 bioethanol, on Friday January 17, according to carbu.com statements. Over the past month, SP98 has increased by 4.6 cents per liter; the SP95-E10 at 4.7 cents; diesel 6.6 cents. On the other hand, E85 bioethanol lost a cent, again according to carbu.com.

Diesel has exceeded the symbolic bar of €1.70 per liter for the first time since the beginning of August 2024. In recent months, French motorists have been able to benefit from relative stability in fuel prices.

A turbulent geopolitical context

The increase in fuel prices in 2025 takes place in a turbulent geopolitical context. Tensions in the Middle East, new American sanctions against Russian oil or the war in Ukraine are disrupting supply chains. Other factors explain this development such as fluctuations in the parity between the euro and the dollar, given that oil is traditionally traded in dollars. Not to mention the oil production limits of OPEC+ oil-producing countries.

More than $80 per barrel of Brent

The barrel of Brent, the world benchmark for the oil market, exceeds $80 again this week, a value exceeded at the beginning of August 2024 and in mid-October 2024.

2025, year of uncertainty

How will prices evolve in 2025? Difficult to say in advance. Everything depends on the decision of the OPEC + countries. Could they significantly increase their production? The production cuts are in effect until the end of March 2025. Another essential factor: the arrival of Donald Trump at the White House on Monday January 20. What consequences will his policy have on world oil prices and therefore on pump prices? Answer in the coming months.
