Hamas must release 33 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel in the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza which is due to come into force on Sunday subject to the final approval of the Israeli government, according to Qatari and American mediators.

Two sources close to Hamas told AFP that Israel would release around 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in this first phase, while an Israeli government spokesperson said hundreds would be freed.

The mediators – Qatar, Egypt, United States – wrested this agreement as Donald Trump approached the arrival at the White House, after 15 months of war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, triggered by the attack without precedent of the Palestinian Islamist movement on October 7, 2023 on Israeli soil.
