British actress Joan Plowright died on Thursday January 16, 2025, at the age of 95. She was particularly known for her role in 101 Dalmatians (1996), alongside Glenn Close, or for her last film appearance in The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008).

Joan Plowright has died at the age of 95, her family announced GuardianFriday January 17, 2025. “She passed away peacefully on Thursday January 16, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones at Denville Hall“, they wrote in a press release. And added: “His brilliant career will be remembered by many people and his children, Richard, Tamsin and Julie-Katetheir families, as well as her many friends will always cherish her. She enjoyed a long and illustrious career in theater, film and television spanning seven decades until blindness caused her to retire. She cherished her last 10 years in Sussex with constant visits from friends and family, filled with lots of laughter and fond memories. The family is deeply grateful to Jean Wilson and all those who cared for her over many years.

Death of Joan Plowright, look back at her career

Born in 1929 in the north of England, Joan Plowright began her career in theater in the 1950s, notably at the Royal National Theatre, where she met her husband Laurence Olivier – to whom she had been married until her died in 1989. She notably won a Tony Award for her role in the play A Taste of Honey (1961). She had also distinguished herself in cinema and television, starting with an appearance – uncredited in the credits – in Moby Dick (1956). She then played in Uncle Vanya (1963), Equus (1977) – which earned him a BAFT nomination -, Enchanted April (1992) – for which she won a Golden Globe, as well as an Oscar nomination –, Jane Eyre (1996), or even 101 Dalmatians (1996). His role in the HBO series Stalin (1992) also won him a Golden Globe. Joan Plowright made one of her last film appearances in The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008). Suffering from macular degeneration, Joan Plowright ended her career in 2014.

In 2004, Joan Plowright was made a Lady by Queen Elizabeth. A title that she agreed to mention in the documentary Nothing like a Dame (2018), as did the recently deceased Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins.
