Denis Law, the illustrious former Manchester United and Scotland striker, has died aged 84, prompting a flood of tributes calling him a “ giant” whose legacy will live on forever.

His family confirmed the sad news, saying they announced it “with a heavy heart”, stressing that he fought valiantly but has now found peace.

During his impressive eleven years at Old Trafford, which ended in 1973, Law scored a remarkable 237 goals in 404 appearances, making him the third highest scorer in the club’s history, behind Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton.

Wayne Rooney expressed his condolences on X, saying: “Legend. Thoughts with all of Denis’ family and friends.”

Law played for Scotland 55 times, making his debut aged just 18 in 1958. He still holds the title of his country’s all-time top scorer with 30 goals, alongside legend Kenny Dalglish.

The talented striker won the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 1964, becoming the only Scottish player to achieve the feat.

Throughout his prolific career at United, Law played a pivotal role in the club’s league victories in 1965 and 1967. However, a serious cartilage injury kept him off the field during the iconic 4-1 win. 1 against Benfica in the European Cup final at Wembley, a match which marked United as the first English club to win the title.

In a statement, Manchester United lamented the loss of “the King of the Stretford End”, referring to the Old Trafford stand which features a statue in his honour, declaring: “He will always be celebrated as one of the greatest great and most beloved of the club.”

The club also added: “The ultimate goalscorer, his flair, his spirit and his love of the game made him the hero of a generation. Our deepest condolences go to Denis’ family and his many friends. His memory will live forever.”

In 2021, Law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. His family expressed their gratitude to all those who contributed to his care and well-being, saying: “We know how many people supported and loved him, and that love was always appreciated and made a difference . THANKS.”

Describing Law as a “fantastic man”, former United and England captain Bryan Robson, who worked with Law in an ambassadorial role at Old Trafford, commented on the loss saying: “We lost one of the giants of football, both as a player and as a man It’s incredibly sad Denis was more than a fantastic footballer he was a fantastic man, generous with his time, always ready to. share his great sense of humor.”

Former Scotland international Joe Jordan called Law a “true icon”, saying: “Denis was a special player and losing someone like him will affect a lot of Manchester United fans. He was a true icon for his ability on the field and had a special touch as a person.”

During an 18-year career, Law also made his mark with Huddersfield, two spells with Manchester City, and Torino. City, the reigning English champions, acknowledged the sad news, noting that “the whole city” is in mourning. In response to United’s post on X, they shared: “The entire city, including everyone at City, is in mourning with you.”
