The world of football is in mourning after the loss of legendary striker Denis Law, who played for Manchester United and Manchester City, at the age of 84.

Denis Law, the only Scot to win the Ballon d’Or, died on Friday, his family announced.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Denis Law. He fought an uphill battle, but now he rests in peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his care and well-being, both in the past and more recently. We know how many people supported and loved him, and that love was always appreciated and made a difference. Thank you all. »

The former footballer scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for Manchester United, making him the third highest scorer in the club’s history, behind Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton.

His former club Manchester United, where a statue of him stands alongside teammates Charlton and George Best outside Old Trafford, said Law will always be regarded as one of the greatest players in the club’s history.

“He will always be celebrated as one of the best and most loved at the club. An exceptional scorer, his talent, his spirit and his love of the game made him a hero of his generation. We send our sincere condolences to Denis’ family and his many friends. His memory will live forever in our hearts. »

After starting his career at Huddersfield, Denis Law briefly joined Torino in Italy, but struggled to settle there, eventually joining Manchester United in 1962. In 2021, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
