The world of cinema mourns David Lynch, famous American director, who died this Thursday, January 16, at the age of 78. His disappearance was announced by his family in a press release published on his official Facebook page. “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist David Lynch. […] There is a great void in the world now that he is no longer with us.”wrote those close to him. Last August, the filmmaker announced that he was suffering from pulmonary emphysema, a serious illness contracted following several years of smoking. David Lynch leaves behind four children born from different relationships: Jennifer, Austin Jack, Riley and Lula.

Released in 1992, this film opens with the mysterious death of Teresa Banks and follows the investigation of agents Dale Cooper and Chester Desmond, who will discover that several residents of the small town of Deer Meadow are involved in this tragic disappearance. For its part, Paris Première will pay tribute to David Lynch by broadcasting his cult film Elephant ManSaturday January 18 at 9 p.m.instead of Bodin’s grandeur nature. Released in 1980, this feature film tells the story of how Doctor Frederick Treves, played by Anthony Hopkins, discovered the existence of a disfigured and deformed man who had become a freak. Played by John Hurt, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2017, the character John Merrick, said “Elephant Man”was born with these deformities due to an accident in which his mother was run over by an elephant while she was pregnant. The Arte channel announced the online release of a new documentary entitled David Lynch, an enigma in Hollywood on its arte.tv platform. “Tracing the filmmaker’s life, this documentary explores the hidden meaning of a relentlessly consistent filmography and delves beneath the dark, teeming surface of the American Dream”we can read in a press release. Wednesday January 22, Arte will also broadcast the film Mulholland Drive at 8:55 p.m. and will offer it on its platform until January 28. Released in 2001, this film starring Laura Harring and Naomi Watts received the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the César for best foreign film.
France Culture will also pay tribute to David Lynch by offering special programming dedicated to his work. This Saturday, January 18, journalist Antoine Guillot and critic Mathieu Macheret will retrace the filmmaker’s career in Plan Largefrom 2 p.m. At 5 p.m., Zoé Sfez will then devote her show The musical series to the musical universe of David Lynch’s filmography.
