Alex Newhook broke the tie midway through the third period and the Montreal hockey club defeated the Dallas Stars 3-1 on Thursday at the American Airlines Center.
The Stars defeated the Canadian 2-1 in a shootout on Saturday at the Bell Centre. This time, the Habs had the best in a match where both attacks had strong moments.
Rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes stopped 32 shots and remained undefeated in four outings in front of the Canadian net.
Juraj Slafkovsky and Joel Armia, in an empty net, also scored for the Canadian (22-18-4), who collected at least one point in a sixth game in a row (5-0-1).
Jason Robertson hit the target for the Stars (28-14-1), who have still won eight of their last 10 games (8-2-0). Jake Oettinger made 21 saves.
The Canadian will play two games at the Bell Center this weekend. It will host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, then the New York Rangers on Sunday.
Action at both ends
Both teams started the match off to a flying start. Christian Dvorak hit the post in the opening moments of the match for the Canadian, while Wyatt Johnston missed the target after charging alone towards Dobes.
The Stars opened the scoring at 3:50. Dobes stopped a shot from Evgenii Dadonov, but the return went straight to Robertson, who was able to shoot in the opening.
-The Canadian responded at 4:37. Cole Caufield did all the work, taunting both Stars defensemen to set the table for Slafkovsky, who only had to shoot into a gaping cage.
Caufield was unlucky a little later, when his shot slipped between Oettinger’s pads, but missed the target.
For his part, Armia reached the post during a two-on-one attack, while the Canadian was outnumbered.
The Stars were tougher in the second period. Dobes stood out by frustrating Logan Stankoven and Johnston in turn on breakaways.
Dobes did it again on Johnston late in the second period, catching a shot from the Stars forward from the slot with his glove.
The game tightened in the third period, but Newhook broke the deadlock at 9:15. After winning the faceoff in the opposing zone, he deflected a shot from Lane Hutson behind Oettinger.
The Stars increased the pressure at the end of the game. However, Armia scored into an empty net with 17 seconds left, scoring his 100th career NHL goal.
