The prime ministers of Canada’s provinces and territories met in Ottawa on Wednesday to discuss the tariff war with the United States, just before the inauguration of Donald Trump.

Danielle Smith, the premier of Alberta, distinguished herself by refusing to sign the communiqué and not attending the meeting, marking a notable dissent.

Furthermore, Ontario Premier Doug Ford attracted attention with his cap bearing the slogan “Canada is not for sale”, reminiscent of Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” caps.

Canada’s strategy in the face of tariff threats remains unclear, with details undisclosed, but unity, with the exception of Alberta, appears to be forming behind the federal plan.

Geneviève Tellier, professor at the University of Ottawa, commented on these events, highlighting the uncertainty and possible economic repercussions.
