The world number 1 and defending champion is still there. Jannik Sinner, who held his place during an entry into the competition which could prove delicate against Nicolas Jarry, faced the Australian wild card Tristan Schoolkate, 173rd in the world and winner of Taro Daniel in the first round.
The Italian completed a set before really getting into his match.
For the first time since his third round in Shanghai against Tomas Martin Etcheverry last year, Sinner conceded a set in an official match. Schoolkate allowed the Rod Laver Arena to heat up a bit.
However, as time went on, the Australian did not last the distance and Sinner quickly set the record straight.
He ended up reversing the trend to win in 2h47 of play (4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3) and win his 9th consecutive success in Melbourne and his 16th victory in a row.
His last setback on the ATP circuit dates back to the Beijing final against Alcaraz on October 2, when the Spaniard won in the decisive match of the last round.
During his third round, Jannik Sinner will challenge Marcos Giron. The American eliminated Tomas Martin Etcheverry for his part (7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4).
On the field, the double Grand Slam winner reflected on his victory of the day.
“Coming back here a year after my title is a special feeling. I had so many great moments on and off the field last season.
I hope to be able to repeat this performance, but there is still a long way to go. You have to go day by day, step by step.
When I analyze my level today, I know that I can improve. I hope I can show signs of improvement in the next round and it will be another good tournament for me,” he said.
