The “silence on lit” operation was born. Concretely, every day from 1:25 p.m. (when afternoon classes resume) to 1:40 p.m., everyone in the school stops what they are doing to dedicate themselves for 15 minutes when reading.

Pleasure reading

This could be a novel, a collection of poetry, a comic book brought from home or borrowed from the school which has them almost everywhere in its corridors. “Not a daily newspaper or a current affairs magazine because the aim is to develop reading pleasure. And also to restore the taste for paper books. The e-reader is tolerated but not the phone or the screen. The book must become something important in the school bag”continues Valérie Lemaire.

Silence without reading

What about students who don’t want to read? “The teachers will discuss with the young people who are reluctant. We will not force the student but use a gentle approach. Start a discussion with him. And if the refusal really persists, we ask the student to remain silent while the others read. This is also the goal of this initiative. We want to hear a pin drop (laughs). , the school doors will be closed and the phone put on answering machine between 1:25 p.m. and 1:40 p.m. “, further specifies the deputy director of 1st degree.

And to make up for this quarter of an hour of reading which takes place at the start of the first lesson in the afternoon, the last three hours of lessons are shortened by 5 minutes.

An evaluation of this new activity will be carried out at the end of the year.
