Skeleton Crew Hints at a George Lucas Movie You May Have Never Seen

In episode 7 of Skeleton Crewbroadcast on January 8 on Disney+, Jod Na Nawood (played by Jude Law) almost managed to get what he wanted. Now there is only one episode left to resolve all the plots. Unless, of course, a season 2 for Skeleton Crewwhich is not yet certain.

Several mysteries still remain to be solved, such as the location of the planet where the four children come from and the real identity of Jod Na Nawood. But this is, for once, not the lore of Star Wars which will be discussed here. It’s more of a discreet nod that the production made, like a tribute to George Lucas.

1 safe visited, and 1,138 others to discover

You had to listen carefully to spot the allusion to George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars. At the end of the episode, when Jod Na Nawood breaks into one of the vaults on the planet At Attin, he discovers thousands and thousands of tons of gold. A real Ali Baba’s cave: the place is simply immense.

Jod Na Nawood then has a little exchange with the droid who accompanies him. He asks her for the total number of such chests, in addition to the one they are visiting. The robot replies that the planet has a total of 1,139 chests. So, another 1,138, not counting this one. However, 1,138 cannot be a number taken at random.

This number is actually an implication which refers to THX 1138George Lucas’ very first film. The American filmmaker, before generating one of the greatest licenses in pop culture, with Star Warsfirst had to prove himself behind the camera. Two films will precede A new hope (1977) : THX 1138 (1971) et American Graffiti (1973).

WhileAmerican Graffiti is a film which tells the slice of life of teenagers in the United States in the 70s, THX 1138 embraces the genre of science fiction. It is also the first film that Francis Ford Coppola produced for George Lucas, his great friend and associate – previously, the two had already collaborated on a documentary.

In THX 1138we follow a character, who gives his name to the film, living in an underground and totalitarian future, where the population is depersonalized due to drugs, and constantly monitored. That is, until the day when THX 1138 stops taking it and discovers emotions, including the love he has for LUH 3417, his roommate.

THX 1138, who was then an uneventful employee, thus gave rise to an illegal relationship and triggered the intervention of the authorities, who did not want this couple. Imprisoned, THX 1138 then seeks to escape and get out of this system of oppression for good. A critical and commercial failure upon its release, the film would gain its reputation later.

Before being a feature film of an hour and a half, THX 1138 was first conceived and shot in the form of a short film (Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB) when George Lucas was finishing his film studies at the University of California. Filmed in 1967, it has been preserved by the Library of Congress since 2010, proof of its importance.

Skeleton Crew is far from being the first work to allude to THX 1138. Other films and series have already made similar nods, in the saga Star Wars.
